Queer Women In History Series
I’ve been having my sixth-grade students write about women who history has overlooked. The first year I did this project one of my students asked if I had any queer poets on the list. I didn’t.
Last summer I decided to find out about more queer women from history so I could add them to the list of options for this year’s students. They were difficult to find. Many of them lived in times and areas when it wasn’t safe or they didn’t have the words to be “out.” But they left clues to their identities.
I hand drew each woman, often while listening to a podcast about her life. Then I traced over them on Adobe Draw. I’ll be continuing this series in summer 2022. This time on Procreate. History has overlooked so many women, I think this project could go on forever.
